Shades of Noir by Leslie Peterson Sapp

A Tribute to Film Noir at RiverSea Gallery In Shades of Noir, a solo exhibition at RiverSea Gallery, Portland area artist, Leslie Peterson Sapp has used images sourced from classic film noir of the 1940s and 1950s to create a compelling series of mixed media paintings with elements of collage. The characters portrayed form a web of intrigue and moral ambiguity subject to the workings of society’s shady underside, much like the films themselves. The paintings allude to exploits of daring and danger, complicated plot twists and mysteries to be solved.

Shades of Noir is a tribute to an American film genre, and the artist has used scenes from these movies as a starting point for her compositions. The paintings transport the viewer into a shadowy world inhabited by hardboiled detectives, femme fatales and all sorts of questionable characters lurking in the corners. Drawn to the drama and tension in these films, which she views as modern day myths, Peterson Sapp has delighted in bringing those qualities to her paintings. In her words, "The classic noir style characterizes the sensual, aesthetic aspects that compel me in this work. In each picture I create, I have carefully crafted an image that is visually arresting and implies a relationship narrative that compels the viewer to wonder, and reflects the enigmatic complexities of my own life."
